Reva Electric Car Company (Pvt.) Ltd. (RECC) and
DRDO are jointly developing the country's first fuel cell car. |
Reva Electric Car Company (Pvt.) Ltd. (RECC) has displayed a fuel cell car at Aero India 2007, the only fuel-cell car in development in the country. Visitors to the show were enthusiastically crowding around the car to see the fuel cell based car, which promises to be the future of automobile development.
The company hopes to produce Fuel cell car for commercial purpose after five years, said Senior General Manager, Marketing & Complete Customer Care of RECC, Mr. Bhaskar Roy speaking to www.aeroindianews.com, the official online show daily of Aero India 2007.
Fuel cell is an electrochemical energy conversion device that produces electricity from external supplies of fuel and oxidant.
Mr. Roy said that the project is still at its nascent stage. He said, "The REVA fuel cell car is currently a technological development and not meant for commercialization as yet.”
The President of India Dr. Abdul Kalam had unveiled the car in July 2004. The fuel cell technology has potential to reduce energy use and harmful emissions. It also offers enhanced efficiencies of 40 to 45 percent compared to IC engines. Like battery run electric vehicles, fuel cell cars are propelled by electric motors, by creating their own electricity through a chemical process using hydrogen fuel and oxygen from atmosphere. Most people believe that these eco-friendly and zero-polluting cars will someday revolutionalise on-road transport.
Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and RECC are jointly developing the car. Mr. Roy said Roy said they don’t expect the car to reach mass market before 2010. He said the car would be very useful for security and patrolling purpose, as it does not make sound.
Mr. Roy said, “We are open for technological transfer as well as ready to tie up with foreign companies.” He explained a lot of companies have showed interest in their project and they have got tremendous response from general public.
