Boomtime seen for Indian aviation

The opening ceremony of the Civil Aviation Expo 2007 was held today at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. Dr. Vishwapati Triwedi, Managing Director, Indian Airlines, in his inaugural speech discussed the various growths and opportunities that the Civil Aviation industry has created in the past few years.

He said that between April 06 and February 07, the domestic airlines market has gone up by 45%. On an average, the daily carriage is expected to go up by 1.25 lakh per day. He also talked about the various challenges that the Civil Aviation industry is facing which includes ‘incredibly high’ input cost. The input cost in India is about 40% of the total cost, which is the highest in the world. Though 6 new low cost airlines have come up in the last 2 years, the industry is still in its infant stage. There is intense competition for passenger traffic as a result of which cost cutting has become difficult. Also, the airlines need support in the form subsidies to offset the high cost of aviation turbine fuel and other inputs.

According to Mr. Triwedi, all though the airlines industry is under great stress, these challenges have given way to numerous opportunities for MROs, training and maintenance of aircrafts in the whole country.
